Fred's Free Records 9

This week's slice of vinyl is a bit more contemporary than usual; it's the debut album by Annie. I'm a big fan of this record and there are many good tracks to choose from. Chewing Gum is great and Heartbeat is a cracker for sure. But the banger is her debut single, Greatest Hit. No video unfortunately but check it out here:

What a smasheroo - should've been number one for months. Anyway a double vinyl copy of this album is yours for free plus a random Fredmix CD if you answer this question in the most pleasing way (it's the inverse of last week's) which song should Annie cover? Tweet your answer with the usual hashtag #fredsfreerecords (new harsh rules after last week's sloppiness) and I'll announce a winner on Friday. Fire when ready!

Fred's Free Records 8 -

Hi folks! I'm back in the saddle with another classic. This is certainly one of my favourite albums of all time and could even be number one - Donald Fagen of Steely Dan's first solo album The Nightfly. Packed with goodies (I.G.Y., Maxine, Ruby Baby) but of course the smasheroo is New Frontier and here's the AWESOME video - it's one of the first animated / live action music videos with a great message and if you haven't seen it you're in for a treat.

All together: "Now I can't wait / Till I move to the city / Till I finally make up my mind / To learn design / And study overseas." I've played this track out a lot and used it in many a mix - it goes especially well with speed garage. I tried to clear it for The Triptych but Mr Fagen himself nixed it by fax which is still kinda nice.

So if you want a vinyl copy of this album delivered to your door at my expense plus a random Fredmix CD then just tweet your answer to this question: Who should cover this song? Don't forget the hashtag #fredsfreerecords - I'll chip in now and then and announce a winner after lunch on Friday. Have fun!

Fred's Free Records 7 - Eighties dancefloor

More vinyl classics to give away this week. First up Soft Cell's hugely underrated Northern Soul cover sequel to Tainted Love, What. Check out the video here but bear in mind you'll be getting the vastly superior 12" version.

Plus (cos they felt like a nice pair) a white label of Propaganda's classic Duel: video here but again your 12" version is an extended one.

It's a musical tragedy that Propaganda split after one album, and I have to say that my heart still skips a beat when I see Claudia Brucken.

To win both these 12", posted to you at my expense with a Fredmix CD thrown in, answer the following question: who would best play Marc Almond in the Hollywood biopic of his life? Tweet the answer with the hashtag #fredsfreerecords and I'll choose a winner on Friday. Have fun pop pickers!

Fred's Free Records 6 - Oh Yeah!

I'm back - Back - BACK! with another smasheroo just for you. This time it's my fave guitar band Yeah Yeah Yeahs with their 2003 cracker Pin, cominatcha in a seven inch picture sleeve and pressed on red vinyl. Mmmm, nice! I know you want it. Hell, I had to think twice about giving it away! But in case you're still pondering, here are YYY in all their glory back in 2003 playing the song in question on Later. Crappy B&W transfer but somehow it seems appropriate and the audio is AOK.

So to get this mailed to you at my expense plus a random Fredmix CD just answer the following question. Which other record should've been pressed on red vinyl? Tweet your answer plus the hashtag #fredsfreerecords and I'll chip in from time to time as per usual.

Gotta love Karen O and the guys. Was her Wild Things soundtrack any good? I never caught it - probably shoulda. Hey ho. Anyhoo GOOD LUCK!

Fred's Free Records 5 - Taking Care Of Business

Right here we go - no time to waste. None. I'm super busy so I'm going to get through this real quick. Blink and you'll miss me. LightningbloggerDeakin27, that's my tag.

Errr, what was I doing? Oh yes, giving away CHOOONS. A double (triple?) bill of late 80s 12" monsters this week: first up is Lil Louis & The World with the monsterous follow up to French Kiss, I Called U. PLUS the biblical banger Blackout on the B-side. OMG. Check 'em out here:

I have to confess that I Called U is one of my favourite records mainly because of the comedy voice over. Me and my partner in clubland Murray used to play it again and again whilst somewhat wasted and do the voice over ourselves - classic timing on the "Oh, did you now?" Raised eyebrow compulsory.

PLUS as if that double header wasn't enough I'm throwing in Joyce Sims - Come Into My Life, more often than not my last tune of the night at Thunderball back in the day. Preview its slinky mastery here:

So - you wanna to know how to get your greedy mitts on them? For free, sent to you at my expense, plus a bonus Fredmix CD? No problem - here we go. Tweet your answer to this question: who on earth is it following Lil Louis in her blue car? "I know who it is..." Make sure you add the hashtag #fredsfreerecords and I will chip in during the week to let you know how you're doing and announce the winner on THURSDAY afternoon (not Friday cos I'm not around - please note - THURSDAY deadline this week.)

"Why can't we start again?" "Who did you see last night - was it someone I know?" So charming; but who is she? Anne Widdecombe? Madonna? Best answer gets the shwag - tweet me baby!

Fred's Free Records 4

So here's the latest vinyl giveaway and it's (IMHO) the best album that Morecambe & Wise ever released. It features "Not Now Later", the opening track from one of the LJ Breezeblock mixes - check it out here.

http://soundcloud.com/impotentfury/lemon-jelly-breezeblock-mix-4

Lots of other goodies on this album and what a great sleeve:

And it's yours! For free! Plus a Fred mix CD! Sent to you by Royal Mail at my expense! And all you have to do is tweet the answer to this question: now we no longer have M&W, which new comedy duo can take us forward into a bold new age? Any two names will do - but I'm vetoing Deakin & Franglen! Tweet your answers with the hashtag #fredsfreerecords and I'll pick the winner on Friday with various input along the way. Have fun!

Fred's Free Records Three - The Prequel

Great chat show action last week - many thanks. Dolly Digital's silent spectacle took my fancy but they were all good - I especially liked Gregz's alcohol frenzy. Dangerous!

Anyway that was then but this is now. Up for grabs this week is a classic 80s disco compilation from my favourite label of that period, Prelude. Prelude's Greatest Hits Volume Two (Vol One isn't nearly as good) features five stone cold classics out of eight which is a damn good strike rate. The main contender is this guaranteed floor filler from Unlimited Touch:

which is rarely out of my box. If that wasn't enough you've got this from the aptly named Secret Weapon (terrible sound quality but you get the idea)

and this from Sharon Redd - (bizarrely great video!)

Not to mention the mighty Keep On from my all time faves D-Train and the one that goes "push, push, in the bush" (!) from Musique. And three other tracks that are also quite good.

So, to win this album for free (mailed to you at my expense with a bonus mix CD thrown in) just answer this question: exactly what kind of music do you hear in the streets? Tweet your answer with the hashtag #fredsfreerecords; I'll chip in from time to time to tell you what's doing it for me and then pick a winner on Friday. Oh and by entering you agree to send me a photo of you with the vinyl should you win, just to prove you got it (still waiting for you dayvisuk...!) Bring it on!

FredsFreeRecords 2 - This Time It's Personal

Thanks for all your entries last week - we had a dope MC crew coming together there. Not to mention fresh. And crucial.

Next up for grabs is this blisteringly hot jazz soul Hammond organ LP from the legendary Harry Stoneham, who most famously wrote and performed the theme tune for Parkinson. This album doesn't have that track on it but it does have this lesser known nugget , also composed by Stoneham and another scorcher.

Check that sleeve also! Some serious dance moves going on there. The whole album's great but this is the track if you know what I mean.

Anyway it's yours for free, sent to your door at my expense plus a mix CD compiled by myself (The Triptych vol 4? Never heard of it!) for the best answer to this question: who would be the three celebrity guests on your fantasy chat show? Tweet your entries with the hashtag #fredsfreerecords - I'll chip in from time to time - phone lines close Friday lunchtime and winner announced shortly after. Can't wait to read what bizarre chat combinations you come up with!

Download Music Legally For Free!

OK, so it's time for my new online vinyl interactive idea thing. I'm going to give away a bunch of records from my personal collection. They're classics - all killer, no filler - that for one reason or another I have doubles of. I'll mail it to you at my own expense and I'll probably throw in a mix CD from my archives; all I ask in return is that you tweet a photo of yourself with the record when you get it.

First up is this original UK rap smash from the Sindecut. Check it out here:

I will give this record for free to the best answer to this question: if you were invited to join The Sindecut what would your alias be? Tweet your answer with the hashtag #fredsfreerecords and I'll compile the best on this site as we go.

Deadline is Friday lunchtime - winner announced Friday afternoon. Looking forward to meeting DJ Crazy Noddy's new MC!

The Third Impotent Fury Online Vinyl Swap

Hi Folks! Here's the third vinyl swap. First up is a hip-hop classic from the 90s, The Lost Boyz' debut single and for me it's all about the B-side, which they later put out as a single in its own right and was a smash. Yup it's all about the Jeeps, Lex Coups, Bimaz & Benz. Check out the video - gooood times!

I love this record. Hey, I might try and swap something for it! Here's the vinyl:

Next up is Shriekback's debut single, punk funk classic My Spine Is The Bassline- check it here:

Shriekback were Barry Andrews from XTC and Dave Allen from the Gang Of Four plus mates; this is a total tune and everyone thought they were going to be amazing when it came out (including Arista who presumably gave them lots of cash) but to my knowledge everything else they released was a disappointment. It's a B-side re-issue bonus track rather than the original version - here's the vinyl.

Finally I found a copy of the first Lemon Jelly album on vinyl in the attic - still sealed! Here it is.

Lots of cutout circles inside the gatefold - that we recycled as free coasters! I remember driving Phil at XL and Dean at Think Tank crazy getting the eyes of the illustrated people to appear through the holes when you pull out the inner sleeves. Happy days...

Usual rules: you have until next Friday (the 17th) to submit your bids. You can do this by posting comments below this entry: I'll pop in from time to time and let you know which way I'm leaning. And please feel free to ad-lib - I'm open to all offers!

Cheers,

Fredx

The Second Impotent Fury Online Vinyl Swap

So after the hotly contested drama of the last vinyl swap here we go again and this time it's a lucky bag selection of discs for your delight. First up is a classic Weather Report album from 1973, Sweetnighter.

Swapper beware - this disc is by no means pristine in fact it's a bit ropey but it plays fine. The tune here is 125th Street Congress (sampled by the Pharcyde among others) which rips it up big time - check it out here:

A banger I'm sure you'll agree. But as if that wasn't enough I am throwing in a copy of Simple Minds' Sister Feelings Call.

The tune here is of course the classic club anthem Theme For Great Cities, sampled and covered by many but never bettered.

Last but not least you can get your mitts on a test pressing (my personal copy in fact) of Lemon Jelly's Rolled Oats.

And here we are playing the A-side at Leeds.

Aah, happy days! Plus I'll throw in a Jelly Choons mix CD. So whatcha got folks? As last time, make me your offers as comments - I'll chip in from time to time - and the winner will be announced at the end of next week ie Friday May 6th. Happy swapping peeps!

The First Impotent Fury Online Vinyl Swap

So, in the tradition of my vinyl swap meets I am initiating an online version. I'm going to put up records every so often and swap them with the best offer made. Here's the first, a classic compilation from the 90s that never left my DJ box.

The killer here is the Fon Force remix of Royal Delite - check it out here:

Feel that bass line at 0.37! And Princess Ivori - Wanted ("young and single and free!") is also pretty good. The rest of the album is pretty weak to be honest but hey, two killer tracks is a good album in my book. You can get it on Discogs for about two euros but that's not the point folks! However to sweeten the pot I am adding a JellyChoons mix CD (one of only 50 given out as prizes on the '64-95 tour) and a random test pressing taken from the Impotent Fury release archive.

So, whatcha got? I'll take anything - vinyl, cuddly toys, cakes, whatever. Make your offers as comments below - I'll pick the winner on Monday April the 18th.
